The secret of the lightning straight punch – karate and boxing - finally revealed
François Tagliaferro, known as Tan, was 16 years old when he heard for the first time the word karate be pronounced.
This term immediately questionned him.
He rapidly became student of the Shokotan club, then opted for the wado-ryu school and finally shito-ryu.
Of course, like all the new followers, he started from zero, as in martial arts we are still in Stone Age, because the so-called « masters » keep selfishly their knowledge.

Tan becomes an accomplished karateka with a high Dan, and a teacher with a State diploma as soon as 1973, but especially an expert in straight fist attacks.

The resulting power or energy is the product of half of the mass of the fist, multiplied by the square of its speed.
Hence the formula : E (energy) = ½ M (mass) V²
It thus can be deduced that in the action of the straight punch (tsuki), it is the speed which is the most important factor by far, since it acts with the square of its value.
It thus results that a weak speed increase inevitably generates an important increase in power.

The proof of effectiveness of this knowledge:
when Tan felt that he was on the right track, he immediately initiated some of his pupils into this knowledge.
He then noted by seeing them moving about on the tatami (Japanese carpet), that these ones had acquired a speed and thus a power that the others did not have.
He himself had gone in various boxing and full-contact clubs on several occasions in order to test the effectiveness of this knwoledge.
On that occasion he had noted this reality, because without putting a very great force to his punch, his adversaries always reproached him for being struck too harshly.
In the club, there was the makiwara practice (a kind of 6 cm thickness « doormat » on its 5 cm thickness wooden support held manually).
Tan decided to make a test of effectiveness.
To this end, he asked two of his strongest pupils to hold a makiwara together.
He got into position and dealt this makiwara a straight punch (gyaku tsuki) in accordance with his knowledge.
The shock was explosive, since the makiwara’s wooden support placed behind the doormat snapped.
In order to be sure that this « breakage » could not result from a defect of the support, he remade the same test with another makiwara a few days laters, and obtained the same result.
He was thus certain at this moment to be owner of the knowledge relating to the lightning and explosive effectiveness of the straight punch (the KIME).
